Garaguso

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,134 · Postal code: 75010

At Garaguso a model of a Greek temple cella in Parian marble turned up by chance, with a seated female deity inside: it is of the fifth century BC, the archaeologist Vittorio Di Cicco made it known in 1916, and today the little temple and the goddess of Garaguso are in the Potenza museum.

The patron is San Gaudenzio, but here he is celebrated on 14 August instead of 14 October, the day of his death: in October the sowing is done, and the feast would have stopped the work. The eighteenth-century Palazzo Revertera was the hinge of the rebuilding after the earthquake of 1694; since 2018 it has been a museum of peasant life. There are 1,134 residents.
