Calciano

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 796 · Postal code: 75010

Coming up from the Basentana you pass what was there before: the Paese di Pede, old Caucium, with its fortification pierced by inhabited caves and the ruins of the chiesa della Rocca. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries floods and landslides persuaded the people of Calciano to move higher up.

They took the Rocca's frescoes up with them, and they now hang in the mother church of San Giovanni Battista alongside a 1503 triptych by Bartolomeo da Pistoia and a fourteenth-century Byzantine copper crucifix. Calciano has been an independent comune only since 1913, and it belongs to the Città del Miele. There are 796 residents.
