Ruvo del Monte

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,099 · Postal code: 85020

For centuries it was written that Ruvo was the Rufrae Virgil names in the Aeneid and Silius Italicus in the Punica. It does not hold: a careful reading of those passages leads to Campania, towards the Samnite towns of what is now the Caserta area. The first certain source on the town is instead of 1045, in a deed of the Codex Diplomaticus Cavensis.

What is certain lies underground: from 1978 to 1989 the digs brought out more than a hundred tombs of the seventh to fifth century BC, whose grave goods are split between the Melfi museum and the civic one opened here in 2000. From Ruvo came the family of Salvatore Lombino, who under the name Evan Hunter wrote the screenplay of Hitchcock's The Birds. There are 1,099 residents.
