Rapone has given itself a nickname: the village of fairy tales. In the woods and the alleys, local tradition says, go about a Mana Longh, u Scorciaman, a Masciara, u Lup Comunal and u Scazzamauriedd; the multimedia museum in contrada Forestella is called C.E.R.A...una volta.
The name, on the other hand, is pure geography: it comes from an augmentative of ripa, that is, a great scarp, and the town stands at 838 metres above the Ofanto valley. The old settlement was higher up, on the Serra delle Pietre, and people came down here after the Gothic War, which lasted in these parts until 555. There are 1,013 residents.

Rapone celebrates Saint Vitus the martyr on 15 June, in the church dedicated to him; the patron does not coincide with the dedicatee of the town's mother church, dedicated to Bishop Saint Nicholas, a sign of two distinct devotions coexisting in Rapone's religious history.
