Castelgrande

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,018 · Postal code: 85050

On 18 December 1273 an earthquake seriously damaged the castle, and from that moment the documents change their word: where before they wrote Castellum de Grandis they begin to write Castrum. The town's name recorded the damage.

Castelgrande sits on a spur facing south and is the Lucanian comune with the widest slice of its territory between 900 and 1,199 metres: a good 60 per cent. The first known mention is in an act of Frederick II between 1231 and 1240, ordering the men from here to see to the upkeep of the castle of Pescopagano. There are 1,018 residents.
