Feast of San Nicola da Tolentino
📅 Every year, on 10 September
On 10 September Albi, a municipality of 1,010 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro, celebrates its patron San Nicola da Tolentino.
Between Albi and Taverna, in the middle of the Sila Piccola, stand the ruins of the abbey of Santa Maria di Peseca: it was founded by Basilian monks, Greeks of Italy, between the tenth and the eleventh century, and tradition has it born from the finding of an icon of the Virgin. Of the complex there survive the perimeter and one wall of the church with two Romanesque windows.
At Albi the surname Corea is common, and in 1932 a Japanese historian concluded from this that the descendants of Antonio Corea, the first Korean to reach Europe, had settled here. The village believed it: in 1989 the mayor had a monument put up in piazza Corea, and in 1992 he travelled to South Korea with the supposed descendants. Scholars now hold the theory to be unlikely.
