Feast of Saint Francis Xavier
📅 Every year, on 3 December
On 3 December Sorbo San Basile celebrates its patron Saint Francis Xavier; the municipal territory includes Colle Castagna.
The name says two things: the sorb, the tree with sour fruit that grows here in quantity, and Saint Basil, because of the Basilian monks who had a monastery in this area as early as 640. The village stands at six hundred metres on the eastern flank of the Sila Piccola, on the right bank of the river Alli.
Higher up, at one thousand one hundred and twenty-two metres, on the western shore of Lake Passante, is the Lagomar village, where people go up in summer: around it are the woods of the Sila Piccola. The municipal coat of arms is recent: it was granted only in 2018, and before that the village had no official one. Little written history is left, and what is known of the past comes from the name and from the monks.
