Amaroni

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,885 · Postal code: 88050

Nobody invented the arms of Amaroni: they were taken from the State Archive of Naples, and they conform to the old seal that appears on volume 6320, the one holding the rivele — the declarations — which the people of Amaroni handed in in 1755 for the drawing up of the catasto onciario, the tax register of the kingdom. Which is to say that the emblem the comune presents itself with today comes from the papers in which its inhabitants, two and a half centuries ago, declared to the king what they owned. The decree that granted it is of 1978.

The village stands at three hundred and seventy-eight metres, on a hill at the foot of Monte Carbonara, in the Preserre, and looks over the wide valley of the Ghetterello torrent; a second torrent, the Ferrera, crosses the territory of the comune. There is a single hamlet, called San Luca. In Calabrian the place is said Lamàruni, with the article stuck on to the front of the name. And the comune is twinned with Risch, in Switzerland.
