Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Vallefiorita, a municipality of 1,849 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
This village has changed its name twice. Until the second half of the Middle Ages it was called Conca d'Oro, the golden basin. Then it became Sant'Elia, because of a Basilian hermitage of which traces remain in the place still called Monastero. And on 26 March 1863, with the kingdom just made, it took the name it bears now, Vallefiorita, a flowering valley: a name chosen, not inherited, as many were chosen in those years.
It stands at three hundred and twenty-nine metres above the gulf of Squillace, in the isthmus of Catanzaro, the point where Italy is narrowest and you have the Ionian on one side and the Tyrrhenian on the other; before anyone else the Oenotrians were here. Nor did anybody invent its arms: they conform to a seal drawn from the State Archive of Naples, from the fund «Voci di vettovaglie», busta 57, fascicolo 11, page 57 — that is, from registers of victuals and supplies. Around it lie eight comuni, among them Amaroni and Squillace.
