Saint Francis of Paola, patron of May
📅 Every year, on 4 May
Botricello celebrates Saint Francis of Paola on 4 May, in the church dedicated to him. The town's other patron, Our Lady of Pompeii, is celebrated the first Sunday after 15 August.
Botricello is a young municipality: it only became one in 1957, after being for years part of Andali. And it lives a double life. There is Botricello Soprano, the old core, which lies inland on the hills, and there is the new town, grown since after the Second World War along the state road 106 Jonica, on the gulf of Squillace: it is the latter that has seen strong population growth in recent decades, pulled by the beaches and by a particularly mild climate. The name, according to some sources, comes from the Greek bothros, which means ditch.
The town says it has no long history, but the ground says otherwise. Near the sea there is a late-antique necropolis, like the one at Roccelletta, excavated between 1967 and 1968: from the tombs, built with little walls of brick or of pebbles, came grave goods rich in small vases and in glass so thin it is astonishing it arrived here whole. Beside the necropolis a small basilica was also found, in very poor condition. Somebody, in short, was burying their dead on this beach long before anyone came here on holiday.
