Acquappesa

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,910 · Postal code: 87020

The name means hanging water, and it comes from a waterfall. Everything here is in the end a matter of water: there are the hot springs of the Terme Luigiane, known since antiquity and among the most visited spas of Calabria, so much so that the comune has a fountain in its arms; and there is a stream called Acqua fetida, stinking water, which is what sulphurous water smells like. In summer the village fills up, and the baths alone offer more than eight hundred beds; the Giro d'Italia has finished a stage at the Terme Luigiane five times.

In 1927 Acquappesa was merged with Guardia Piemontese into a single comune, which was called Guardia Piemontese Terme: the new name took the village of the one and the baths of the other. Autonomy came back in 1945. The territory, what is more, is not all in one piece: there is a detached administrative island, called Pistuolo e Spaliota. Six kilometres are coast on the Tyrrhenian, and behind the coast the heights climb to Monte Pistuolo, past a crag that people here call the Devil's rock.
