Crosia

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 9,481 · Postal code: 87060

The name, according to Gerhard Rohlfs, comes from the Greek chrusea, place of gold, and is connected with the gold and silver mines of this area, which at Longobucco were worked until the eighteenth century. There is also a local tradition, with nothing to support it, that traces it to Kreusa, the first wife of Aeneas. What is certain is that here, on the river Traente, the Sybarites who survived the destruction of their city tried to found it again: they did not last long, driven out and killed by the Bruttii.

On the twenty-fifth of April 1836 an earthquake of the tenth degree destroyed almost everything: the part of the village called La Terra was reduced to a heap of rubble, and in the rest twenty-three houses were left standing. The dead were one hundred and forty out of about five hundred and seventy inhabitants, a quarter of the village. Today the municipality lives mainly on the coast, in the district of Mirto, which has grown to the point of emptying the old hill town.
