Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Figline Vegliaturo, a municipality of 1,097 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
The villages around Cosenza, the Casali, were royal demesne and not fiefs, a rare thing in the Kingdom of Naples. But in 1644 the Spanish viceroyalty was so short of money that it sold them to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and three years later they came back to the crown. There were eighty-two of them then; twenty-six are comuni today.
Figline comes from the clay: figlina, the potter's workshop or the clay pit. The second half of the name was added in 1864, and the council minutes say why: letters kept going astray, because too many places in the kingdom were called the same. Vegliaturo is the Latin vigilatorium, a place for keeping watch. Here was born Aulo Giano Parrasio, who in 1511 founded the Accademia Cosentina.
