Rogliano

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 5,697 · Postal code: 87054

They call it the village of the twelve churches, and the count tells you how it is built: each quarter grew around its own church, linked by narrow lanes that here are called rughe. On 27 March 1638 an earthquake levelled the town and killed twelve hundred people; it was Palm Sunday, and the greatest number of victims was counted inside the church of San Pietro, during the service. The survivors climbed further up the slope, where the ground gave way less, and rebuilt in the horseshoe shape the old town still has.

Between 1940 and 1943 Rogliano was one of the fourteen Calabrian municipalities chosen by the fascist authorities for the free internment of Jewish refugees. Twenty-three of them arrived, from Germany, Austria and Poland. In September 1943 the fifteen still in the town were freed with the arrival of the Allies, and so were the four meanwhile transferred to Ferramonti. The four members of the Oberzanek family, father, mother and two children, had been moved to Villanova d'Asti in October 1941: they were deported to Auschwitz.
