Cellara

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 511 · Postal code: 87050

From here, in half an hour by car, you reach the sea or climb into the Sila: the village stands at seven hundred and fifty metres, exactly between the two, and its territory runs from a little under six hundred metres to over fourteen hundred. All around are woods of chestnut and pine, and from those woods come the two things the place is known for: mushrooms and chestnuts.

In summer the feast of Saint Sebastian is held, and for the occasion the village builds what everyone calls the Pullicinella. In the church of San Pietro there are wooden altars of great value. And from Cellara came the family of Luigi Fera, jurist and member of parliament of the Kingdom of Italy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: he himself, though, was born in Cosenza and died in Rome, and what the village keeps is the origin, not the birth.
