Marano Marchesato has 3,474 inhabitants on the hills that look towards Cosenza, on the slope of the Catena Costiera. The town exists because of an earthquake: the one of 27 March 1638, which killed about ten thousand people in the Cosenza area. Those left without a house at Rende and at Castelfranco — today Castrolibero — moved into the Marano countryside, where many families already owned land. At first they were makeshift shelters; then proper houses were built, and out of that the town was born.
Once it had grown, the village became the object of a lawsuit: the Sersale princes of Castelfranco and the Alarcón y Mendoza marquises of Rende both claimed it. The case dragged on for years, until in 1684 the Consiglio Collaterale of Naples sent a royal surveyor out to measure and decide. The ruling cut the town in two: the south-western part to the Sersale, all the other districts to the Alarcón y Mendoza. Marano remained a hamlet of Rende until the end of feudalism, in 1806.
