Rende is a two-storey city: on the hill, the old village of lanes, noble palaces and civic museums with views running down the Crati valley; on the plain, the university city grown around Unical, the athenaeum founded in 1972 at Arcavacata as Italy's first residential campus — bridges, cubes and thirty thousand students keeping the whole Cosenza urban area young.
The Museum of the Present and a students' scene of venues complete the character. The Sila highlands and the Tyrrhenian compete for weekends: half an hour's drive either way.
