Mendicino

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 9,238 · Postal code: 87040

The name of the village may be the oldest recorded in the district: Hecataeus of Miletus, listing the cities of the Oenotrians in the sixth century before Christ, mentions a Moinekine, and from that, altered over the centuries, Mendicino is said to come. The Greek has stayed in the rivers that close the territory too: the Caronte, the Arconte, the Mericano.

The mountains around have fed one of the most stubborn legends in Calabria: that the treasure of Alaric is here, and more than one search has been made on the heights of Mendicino. What is certain is that the pink stone that gives the old town its colour comes from here, like the stone of the little church of San Sebastiano, where an inscription bears the date 1579. Above everything stands Monte Cocuzzo, and from the mountain, on clear days, the eye reaches as far as Sicily.
