Domanico

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 943 · Postal code: 87030

Domanico stands in the upper valley of the Busento, the river which further down, at Cosenza, legend makes the tomb of Alaric. Until 1445 the village belonged to the archbishop of Cosenza, then it passed to the Adorno and finally to the Spanish de Alarcón y Mendoza, marquises of the Valle Siciliana, who held it until the end of feudalism.

In the church of San Giovanni Battista, at the top of a long stairway, there are an organ built by Mauro Gallo in 1754, an altarpiece of the Baptism of Christ attributed to Cristoforo Santanna and a sixteenth-century bell. The earthquake of 1905 damaged the village; of the Motta, the medieval fortress above the houses, few stones are left. Higher up, at Potame, lies the pine wood.
