Papasidero

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 808 · Postal code: 87020

In 1961, a few kilometres from the village, the Grotta del Romito was found: inside were carvings and burials twenty thousand years old, and from then on it was known that northern Calabria was already inhabited. The name of the municipality, instead, comes from the Greek: Papàs Isidoros, father Isidore, a Basilian monk who headed a monastery in the area.

In the coat of arms there are stars above the crag, by assonance with sidereus, starry. The village is medieval, with the castle at the top and one of the old gates still standing, the gate of the changing of the guard. From 1593 a Monte di Pietà was at work, set up by the bishop of Cassano, who was Welsh. In the territory there is also Avena, an abandoned village, and on the Lao people go rafting.
