Feast of Saint Theodore
📅 Every year, on 9 November
On 9 November Laino Castello celebrates its patron Saint Theodore, to whom the main church in the town centre is dedicated.
The first evacuation order came in 1960, for the instability of the ground, and already in 1958 a collapsing wall had buried a doctor's car; after the earthquake of 21 March 1982 the inhabitants went down to the locality of Pornia, where the municipality was rebuilt, and the village above was left empty.
Before it emptied, Laino was a place that counted: from 851 it was the head of one of the largest gastaldates of the south, the liturgy was sung in Greek until 1562 because of the Basilian monks, and in 1500 the fief went to the de Cardenas, marquises of Laino. Every Christmas the abandoned village fills up again for the living nativity, staged in its houses and in the caves cut into the rock.
