Approaching San Giovanni in Fiore, the first landmark to command attention is the Florense Abbey, a massive religious complex dating back to 1188. The town grew directly from this foundation laid by the Calabrian monk Joachim of Fiore, a figure so influential that Oxford scholar Marjorie Reeves was granted honorary citizenship here for reviving his historical legacy.
With nearly 17,900 residents, this is the most populous settlement in the Sila Grande. Beyond the abbey, the historic center retains a network of noble palaces and older churches. Its definitive symbol is the so-called Norman Arch; despite its title, the city's architectural centerpiece actually originated during the Swabian period.
