Castelsilano

Province: Crotone · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,034 · Postal code: 88834

Until 1950 the village was called Casino, and the people wrote to the President of the Republic to have it changed, because by then the name was a joke: Einaudi agreed, and Castelsilano was born. The old name came from a hunting lodge built in 1650 by the prince of Cerenzia, who is said to have wanted it to mark a peace he had made between two quarrelling dukes, after a day's hunting and a good dinner.

A stone marks the place where the Bandiera brothers were captured; in the hills stand the remains of the oldest hydroelectric station in Calabria; and along the streets of the village there are seventy murals. In 1980 a Libyan MiG came down in these mountains, and the place filled with journalists and policemen; the film that told the story could not shoot here, and used a Sicilian village instead.
