One of the patrons of Santa Sofia d'Epiro is Saint Sophia the Martyr, who gives the town its name and is celebrated on 30 September.
Santa Sofia d'Epiro is an Arbëresh (Italo-Albanian) municipality, founded by Albanian refugees fleeing the Ottoman invasion: the Museum of the Territory and Arbëreshe Costume, at Palazzo Bugliari, still preserves the traditional dress of Albanian women.
