Feast of the Madonna del Carmine
📅 Every year, on the Tuesday after Easter
On the Tuesday after Easter Terravecchia, a municipality of 1,019 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza, celebrates its patroness the Madonna del Carmine.
The name says it: this is the old land, and what it was told apart from is Cariati, built new down by the sea. In 1808 the French abolished the village's autonomy and made it a district of Cariati itself: the people of Terravecchia sent petitions for more than a century, and got their comune back only in 1921.
In 1799, under the Neapolitan Republic, trees of liberty were planted in the squares; the army of cardinal Ruffo had them cut down or burnt. Very few are still standing where they were put: at Squillace, at Montepaone and here, an elm more than two centuries old, with a trunk eighty centimetres across and a crown fifteen metres wide.
