Scandale

Province: Crotone · Region: Calabria · Population: 3,326 · Postal code: 88831

Scandale has 3,326 inhabitants on a hill in the middle of the Marchesato, between the Ionian and the Sila. The name comes from Greek and means something precise: the little piece of wood in a trap to which the bait is fixed, and by extension the trap itself; a village with the same name stands on the island of Lemnos. The present village was founded in 1555 by count Galeotto Carafa of Santa Severina, who granted the inhabitants nineteen chapters of privileges; six years later, when the treasurer of Calabria drew up his accounts, Scandale held twenty-five Arbëreshë-speaking families and a single Italian one.

On 26 July 1806 the comune said no to the French troops who were asking for provisions. General Reynier in reprisal sent cavalry and infantry to sack the village, and twenty-five people of Scandale died in the fighting. Then, in 1832, came the earthquake: dozens of houses down and three dead. The nineteenth-century chronicles relate that baron Salvatore Drammis had forty of them rebuilt at his own expense and gave them to the poor of the place, and that in the famine of 1843, which decimated the people of Calabria Ulteriore, he bought grain and flour at the Crotone market and sold it in the village at a third of the price.
