Bagaladi

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,082 · Postal code: 89060

Bagaladi means «the land of the Bagalà family»: the surname comes from the Arabic Bahāʾ Allāh, the beauty that comes from God, and the ending is the Greek -ades, which hereabouts said whose a piece of land was. In the Greek of Calabria the village is Vagalàdes. The popular reading, «valley of oil», has no foundation, though the valley is indeed full of olive trees — and the Arab geographer al-Idrisi called this river the honey stream.

In the church of the Santissima Annunziata there are a Byzantine cross of the tenth century and a marble Annunciation by Antonello Gagini. The village itself grew out of the Basilian monasteries of the Tuccio valley, and along the water the mills and the oil presses are still there.
