Roghudi

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,172 · Postal code: 89060

Roghudi is a comune in two pieces, forty kilometres apart. The old village stands on the Aspromonte and is empty: after the floods of October 1971 and January 1973 it was declared unfit to live in and its people were parcelled out among the villages around. The new village was built only in 1988, near the sea, inside the territory of Melito di Porto Salvo.

There is more than one explanation of the name: from the Greek rhogodes, «full of crevasses», or rhekhodes, «harsh»; or from an old root meaning wind, for a very windy place, which it certainly is. Greek of Calabria is still spoken here, what is left of Magna Graecia: in that tongue the village is Richùdi.
