Condofuri lies in the Grecanic area, that part of Calabria where a language closely related to ancient Greek is still spoken and written. The name says as much: it comes from Konta-Chorion, that is «near the village», and in Byzantine Greek the place was called Kontochòrion; some, starting from the form Kontofyria, have proposed a less flattering «den of thieves», but nobody takes that as certain. Its Magna Graecia origin can be read in the plan of the centre: in place of a square there is an agorà, on which the church stands and into which all the lanes of the village run.

The roles have been reversed over time. Condofuri was part of the barony of Gallicianò and Amendolea; then, with the French decree of 1811 that set up districts and municipalities, it was placed at the head of those very two villages, which today are its hamlets. At Gallicianò there is the Orthodox church of the Panaghìa tis Elladas, the Madonna of the Greeks, and every August these villages used to host the Paleariza festival. In 1943 the station of Condofuri was hit by an Allied bombing raid in which soldiers and civilians died.
