Bagnara Calabra

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 10,622 · Postal code: 89011

On the Marturano rock Roger the Norman had an abbey built, around 1085, that was an anomaly: Catholic of the Roman rite in a land still wholly of the Greek church. It was declared res nullius, subject to the pope alone, and with the count's donations its possessions reached as far as Cefalù, in Sicily. The earthquake of 1783 razed it; the one of 1908 did further damage, and in 1910 Antonio De Leo had Eugenio Mollino build him an Art Nouveau villa that was the first great earthquake-proof gentleman's house on the coast.

The symbol of Bagnara, though, is not a building: it is the bagnarota, the woman who carried fresh fish from door to door with a wicker basket on her head. The statue raised to her in piazza Marconi has deliberately oversized hands and feet. The word Calabra, on the other hand, arrived after the unification of Italy, so as not to confuse the town with Bagnara di Romagna.
