San Roberto

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,833 · Postal code: 89050

The village probably began in the fourteenth century as a hamlet of the barony of Fiumara di Muro, and about its origins nothing more certain is known. What is known exactly is how it behaved in the earthquakes, which in these parts are the measure by which history is told: the catastrophes of 1783 and of 1894 left it almost unharmed, while the one of 1908 damaged it gravely and killed four hundred and four people here. For a place of this size that is a figure that changes everything.

San Roberto stands at two hundred and eighty metres, inside the Aspromonte national park, and the nearest sea is the sea at Scilla. The work is the fields and the woods: olive groves, citrus groves and chestnut woods. The oil is produced on an industrial scale; the dairy work is done by hand, and by hand too are made the canestri and the gerle, the baskets you carry on your back. The other trade is timber, chestnut above all. Around it are five comuni, from Scilla down on the sea up to Santo Stefano in Aspromonte.
