Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 4,053 · Postal code: 89027

Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte has 4,053 inhabitants on the Tyrrhenian side of the Aspromonte. The village grew up around the monasteries of the Basilian monks, the richest of which was San Bartolomeo di Trigona, founded by Bartolomeo di Simeri: oral tradition says that a kilo of gold a day came into it. For centuries it was a hamlet of Sinopoli and subject to the Ruffo, until in 1790, under mayor Vincenzo Panuccio, the village brought a lawsuit to free itself from that rule — and won it. Then it changed its name: from Sant'Eufemia di Sinopoli to Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte.

On 29 August 1862, on the mountain that the village carries in its name, Garibaldi was wounded by Pallavicini's royal soldiers; a monument stands on the spot of the clash. The earthquake of 28 December 1908 razed the town and killed eight hundred and thirty-nine people. The Milanese came: they built the barracks, brought money and clothes, raised a church dedicated to Saint Ambrose, and on 9 March 1909 the city of Milan gave the comune its own flag, the red cross on a white field.
