Canolo

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 801 · Postal code: 89040

Canolo is a village that moved. Ever since 1806, when the woods around it were felled without restraint, the ground began to shift: floods in 1880 and 1881, which carried away even the retaining wall just built; earthquakes in 1894, 1905, 1907 and 1908, which brought down twenty-five houses and the church twice.

The flood of October 1951 killed three people, and in April 1952 a decree ordered the village to be moved up to the plains of the Melia. So Canolo Nuova was born, which has become more populous than the old village; but the seat of the comune stayed below. The name comes from the Greek for channel, and the first settlement is said to date from 952, when the Arabs took Gerace and people fled inland.
