Casignana

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 773 · Postal code: 89030

In 1963, while digging for the main road, a Roman villa came to light: mosaics with sea figures, private baths, a nymphaeum. It is the largest Roman archaeological park of the Locride, and the village probably bears the name of the owner of that villa, one Casinius.

On 21 September 1922 the labourers of the Garibaldi cooperative were occupying the lands of the prince of Roccella. Carabinieri and fascists opened fire: the socialist councillor Pasquale Micchia and two peasants, Rosario Micò and Girolamo Panetta, were killed, and the mayor was wounded. These are the «facts of Casignana», from which Mario La Cava drew a novel. From 1927 to 1946 the comune did not exist: it was inside San Giovanni Samio, with three other villages.
