Caraffa del Bianco

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 532 · Postal code: 89030

One man founded this village, between 1589 and 1594: Fabrizio Carafa, prince of Roccella, who took into his own fief several noble families at odds with the duke of Precacore and had them build in a place called the Pizzo. He gave it his surname because he had already used his first name for another village, Fabrizia. The first to start on the walls, the Sotira, stopped at once: lightning struck, they took it for a bad omen and rebuilt further along, where the place is still called Chiesa Vecchia. Then the prince bought them a fountain, leaving the former owner the use of the water on Saturdays only: on the other days it had to turn the mills of the new village, so that it would no longer depend on the old one.

On the town banner there is a rearing white horse, and it is not an ornament: the Regia Razza was bred here, horses sold even to the royal stables of Naples. In 1847 the village gave the Mazzinian risings of Calabria one of the Five Martyrs of Gerace, Rocco Verduci, a young landowner of liberal ideas, shot on the second of October that year; the five used to meet in the green room of Palazzo Barletta, a few steps from his house. In 1926 Fascism abolished the comune, merging it with three others, and Caraffa came back into existence only in 1946.
