Our Lady of Pugliano and the procession to the sea
📅 Every year, from 13 to 15 August
Bianco celebrates Our Lady of Pugliano from 13 to 15 August, the culminating moment of the town's religious and civic life.
Bianco has 4,125 inhabitants on the Costa dei Gelsomini, between the mouths of the Bonamico and the Laverde. The sailors gave it its name: from the open sea the clayey soil of the village looked like a white patch among the neighbouring lands. The first written record is from 1194, in a register of the county of Sinopoli, where the village appears as Mocta Blanci, already fortified and walled. From its loading point sailed timber and black pitch, drawn from the forests above Samo.
The earthquake of 1783 razed the old village and pushed people towards the shore, where Bianco Novo was born. In the autumn of 1847 a revolt broke out here: the insurgents occupied Bianco, Bovalino and Caraffa, burned the royal coats of arms and the police papers and issued a proclamation abolishing the ban on drawing sea water — then used as a medicine — and the government duty, halving the price of salt and tobacco. It was crushed within days: among the five martyrs shot at Gerace was Domenico Salvadori, from Bianco.
