The patron saint of Gioia Tauro is Saint Hippolytus the martyr, celebrated on 13 August in the church dedicated to him.
Also deeply felt is the feast of Our Lady of Porto Salvo, on 8 September: for over thirty years the celebrations have drawn intense popular participation, led by a committee called the «Bearers of the Bier of Holy Mary of Porto Salvo», made up mostly of young people from the town. In the early 2000s, the date of the religious event was moved from 12 to 8 September. In the church dedicated to her, on 9 May 2003, a fine 16th-century wooden crucifix from the Venetian school, attributed to Giorgione, was donated. The town also holds the Metauros Archaeological Museum.
