Serrata

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 914 · Postal code: 89020

The oldest document that names Serrata concerns the passing of some land to the abbey of Mileto, the great Norman foundation of these parts. The village was then ruined by the earthquake of 1783, the one that levelled half of Calabria, and in 1807, under the French administrative order, it was listed as a Luogo in the government of Laureana.

The feasts are the village calendar: Saint Joseph on 19 March, the Affruntata on Easter Sunday, the meeting of the Madonna with her risen Son, Saint Pantaleon on 27 July, who is the patron, and Saint Roch on 16 August. For the patron the dance of the Giants is still performed, with the great figures carried through the streets. There is also a community of nuns here, the Daughters of Saint Veronica.
