Feast of Our Lady of Consolation
📅 On 5 February and the first Sunday of September
On 5 February Brognaturo celebrates Our Lady of Consolation, the town's patroness, who is honoured again on the first Sunday of September.
The name, they say, comes from the Byzantine Greek Vrondismènon: the place of thunder. But there is another word close to it, and that is the one the village put on its coat of arms: a brogna is the conch shell shepherds used to blow to call the herds in. Thunder or shell horn, either way it is a sound that echoes among the mountains. Brognaturo stands on the eastern side of the Serre, above the Ancinale, with Spadola on the other side of the valley.
On 5 February 1721, while the church was being restored, an image of the Virgin and Child came to light under the plaster of a wall. Since then she has been the Madonna della Consolazione: healings are attributed to her, and the protection of the village during the earthquake of 1783 and the flood of 1935. The church became a sanctuary in 1993, and the feast is kept on 5 February and on the first Sunday of September. The craft of the place is wood carving, and pipes above all.
