Feast of Saint Domenica
📅 Every year, on 6 July
On 6 July Torre di Ruggiero, a municipality of 1,131 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro, celebrates its patroness Saint Domenica (Santa Domenica).
On the fifth of February 1783 the great Calabrian earthquake razed the building of Basilian origin that stood here; the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie was rebuilt on the same spot only in 1858, three generations later.
The village lives above all on the round hazelnut of Calabria, brought in the mid-nineteenth century to nearby Cardinale and then carried over the boundary. It stands at more than five hundred metres, on the eastern side of the Serre above the Ancinale valley, and the Sentiero Italia, the long path of the Italian Alpine Club, crosses its beech and chestnut woods.
