Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Spadola celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The first document that names Spadola is of 1093: count Roger was granting Saint Bruno a piece of the plateau, and in describing the boundaries he wrote that the water runs «per Spatulam» down to the river Ancinale. The name would come from ex palude, out of the marsh, because the river then flooded the plain and left dry only the hill, where before the cross there was an altar to Minerva.
For eight centuries the village belonged to the Carthusians: sawmills came, and an ironworks run by the brother of Ettore Fieramosca. Twice, in 1339 and in 1357, the inhabitants went off together into the woods rather than pay taxes they could not pay, and came back only when the king wrote off the debt. Spadola became a municipality under Murat, when the charterhouse was suppressed.
