In Pizzo's Aragonese castle, on 13 October 1815, Joachim Murat — king of Naples and Napoleon's brother-in-law — was executed by firing squad: the "Murat castle" rooms retrace his lightning trial, among the most novelistic pages of European history. The town, high over the gulf of Sant'Eufemia, lives on overhanging squares and descending lanes.
The other two glories are sweet and mystical: the tartufo di Pizzo, the chocolate-hazelnut ice-cream dome with molten heart born in the piazza's gelaterie, and the church of Piedigrotta, carved into seaside tuff and peopled with statues — unique in the world.
