Cassano Irpino

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 967 · Postal code: 83040

The water from here goes to Puglia: the Picentini springs that rise in the municipal territory are gathered into a tunnel seventeen kilometres long and feed the Apulian aqueduct, serving one hundred and eighteen municipalities of the Avellino area and some towns in the Benevento one. The same springs swell the Calore, which runs below the village.

The name comes from a praedium Cassianum, the estate of the gens Cassia; at the top of the village stands the castle the Lombards built, later a baronial palace, and the borgo grew around its keep. The coat of arms is known from an image of 1537, almost the same as today's. The land gives the chestnut of Montella and the Cassano apples, and the station, on the Avellino-Rocchetta line, now sees only heritage trains.
