Saint Roch, patron of the Convent of San Francesco a Folloni
📅 Every year, on 16 August
Montella celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August.
In the convent of San Francesco at Folloni is kept the only original giornea ever found: it was the surcoat of Count Diego Cavaniglia, who died in 1481 at the battle of Otranto against the Turks, and it is part of his funeral vestments. Of that garment, utterly ordinary in the fifteenth century, no other example survives anywhere in the world.
Montella is chestnuts — the protected name carries the town's own — and above all water: four springs in its territory feed the Apulian Aqueduct, and the river Calore Irpino rises here. Of its ninety-three square kilometres, almost half are woodland and more than sixteen per cent chestnut groves. The town sits at a little over five hundred metres, below the Picentini mountains.
