Lioni

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 6,335 · Postal code: 83047

In front of the town hall of Lioni there is a stone lion. There were two, and the name of the village may well come from them; the other was broken by the earthquake of 1732. The name appears for the first time in 883, in a donation with which the Lombard prince Sichard assigned to the abbess of Santa Sofia a property in Leoni.

On the twenty-third of November 1980 the Irpinia earthquake made Lioni one of the worst-hit towns: more than two hundred dead and almost every building destroyed or badly damaged. The municipality holds the gold medal for civil merit for the way it faced the rebuilding, and not only that of the houses. The mother church, Santa Maria Assunta, of the fourteenth century, has been rebuilt twice for two earthquakes: the one of 1694 and the one of 1980.
