Monteverde

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 831 · Postal code: 83049

From 1532 to 1641 this village of Irpinia belonged to the Grimaldi, the family that reigns in Monaco: the castle, raised by the Lombards, still bears their name. Earlier still Monteverde was a bishop's seat, from the eleventh century until 1531; the mother church was its cathedral, and the diocese was closed altogether in 1818.

Since 2006 the village has set about making itself walkable by those who cannot see: five kilometres of tactile paths in the paving, audio guides, routes for those who cannot hear and for those who find walking hard. In 2019 the European Union gave it a prize for this, collected in Brussels. And since 2010, in spring, the black stork, which is very rare, nests here.
