Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Rocchetta Sant'Antonio celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot, whose name became part of the town's own name; the Castello Baronale stands here.
The village has changed its name six times: Oppidum Rocca, Roccette Sancti Antimi, Rocce Sant'Antimo, Sant'Antimo in Rocca, Rocchetta di Puglia and at last Rocchetta Sant'Antonio — along the way, a Saint Anthimus turned into a Saint Anthony. Of the castle, the main tower was already there in Norman times; in 1501 baron Ladislao II d'Aquino bought it and had it enlarged, perhaps to a design by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, with the work finished in 1507. It was that enlargement that made the village grow, turning it from a simple vicus into an oppidum.
Rocchetta is a border village, and you can hear it: the dialect belongs to the Daunian-Irpinian group and is transitional towards the speech of inland Campania. The administration treated it that way too, for a long time: until 1939 the municipality belonged to the province of Avellino, and only afterwards did it pass to Foggia. At its station, meanwhile, three railway lines cross — Foggia to Potenza, Avellino to Rocchetta and Rocchetta to Gioia del Colle — which is uncommon for a place of this size.
