Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua
📅 Every year, on 13 June
On 13 June Pago del Vallo di Lauro, a municipality of 1,851 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony of Padua.
The name comes from the Latin pagus, and the explanation given for it is a precise one: Pago is supposed to have been the office where the valley's religious taxes were collected. What supports it is that a temple dedicated to the Divine Augustus stood here. That the ground is Roman is not in doubt in any case: the digs have given up marble columns and the floors of temples, the ruins of farm villas, tombs and stones with inscriptions.
In the Middle Ages the village was a fief of the lords of Lauro; in the fifteenth century it passed to Andrea de Capua, and in the sixteenth it became a holding of the noble Cutillo. Of its churches, that of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli was built in the sixteen hundreds and then made again from scratch after the earthquake of 1732, in late baroque forms, and it keeps frescoes by Mozzillo; the other, at Pernosano, is called Santa Maria Assunta but also, from the place, of the Carpinelli. The comune has two hamlets, Pernosano and Sopravia, and stands at a hundred and thirty metres, in the Vallo di Lauro.
