In 960, a judge documented a land dispute in local vernacular rather than Latin. This text, the Placito capuano, remains a foundational milestone of the written Italian language. Built by the Longobards over the ruins of Roman Casilinum, Capua eventually became the primary northern fortress of the Kingdom of Naples. Thick walls and twin castles secured its strategic Volturno river crossing between the Appian and Casilina ways.
Home to 19,036 residents, the city bridges rigid military history with modern science. An archdiocese since 856, Capua now looks upward, housing the Italian Aerospace Research Centre since 1984. It stands as a pivotal node of the Campanian plain where medieval defense systems meet advanced engineering.

Capua celebrates Saint Agatha and Saint Stephen on 5 February; the town was the birthplace, in 1476, of Ettore Fieramosca, hero of the Challenge of Barletta, today also remembered by a monumental bronze helmet serving as the town's info-point.
