Villamaina

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 1,018 · Postal code: 83050

At the top of the hill, where the village stands, there is no spring: the water had to be brought up from the valley, on mules or on people's heads, in big jars. When electricity arrived in the twenties, the villagers who had emigrated to America sent the money for an electric pump at the Formulano spring, and three public fountains could be built in the village.

Not far off is the Mefite of the valley of Ansanto, which Virgil names in the Aeneid: there the botanist Giovanni Gussone, born in the village, found a broom that his master Michele Tenore christened Genista Anxantica, after the valley's name. The village park carries Gussone's name and stands where, after the 1980 earthquake, the prefabs used to be.
